Every name in the generator is in the Meiji Yasuda Life rankings. The given names come from the baby name survey 2025: 65 boy spellings and 67 girl spellings, each with its reading. The surnames come from the national surname survey 2008, which lists the 100 most common surnames in Japan, each with its main reading. The spellings are the kanji names in the 2025 top 100 for each gender whose reading is also among the 50 most used readings for that gender: 65 for boys and 67 for girls.
The gender filter limits the given names to the boy list or the girl list. Any draws from both lists at once.
The kanji of each spelling and their meanings come from KANJIDIC2, from the EDRDG. The sources are linked at the bottom of the page.
When you press the button, the generator picks ten different given names from the list you chose. With the surname on, it also picks ten different surnames and pairs them with the given names at random. Across all the options there are 12,700 possible full names.
Each result is written in Japanese order: surname first, then given name. With the surname off you see the given name alone.
A spelling can have more than one published reading. The generator uses the first ones Meiji Yasuda lists, so the same kanji can appear with different readings in different results. A few spellings are in both the boy list and the girl list, and the result says which list it came from.
At the top is the full name in kanji. Below it are the reading in hiragana and the romaji. The romaji is written from the kana with long vowels as double letters, so ゆうと becomes Yuuto.
Each part of the name has its own line. For the given name, the first number is the place of the kanji spelling in the 2025 top 100 for its gender, and the second is the place of its reading among the 2025 readings for that gender. Names with the same count share a rank. For the surname, the rank is the one Meiji Yasuda published in 2008.
The kanji on each line links to the name page or the surname page, where you find more spellings and readings.
12 of the 100 surnames also have a second common reading. The generator uses only the first one listed, the main reading, so 山崎 is always やまざき and 高木 is always たかぎ. The result shows that reading and the audio says exactly that one.
The surname readings come from JMnedict. For each surname the generator takes the reading whose romaji matches the one in the English Wikipedia list of common Japanese surnames.
Under each part you see every kanji with up to three meanings from KANJIDIC2. On the Spanish pages, a kanji with no Spanish meaning in KANJIDIC2 shows the English one, marked as English.
The dictionaries give meanings per kanji, not per name. That is why each result shows its kanji one by one and writes no meaning for the whole name.
The speaker button plays the full name in a synthetic Japanese voice from Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. The text it sends is the name in katakana, with the surname and the given name separated by a pause. With the surname off, only the given name plays.
The audio is made the first time someone asks for it and then saved, so everyone hears the same recording. It is a synthetic voice and now and then it may stumble on a name.
Each part is real and has a rank in its survey. The pairing of surname and given name is a random match of the two lists and is not a registered name.
It is the position in the Meiji Yasuda ranking: the 2025 top 100 of spellings for given names, the reading ranking for the reading, and the 2008 survey for surnames.
The kanji of a name are chosen for their sound and for their sense, and the sources on this site give meanings per kanji. The result shows each kanji with its own.
It is the order in which full names are written and said in Japanese. The audio follows the same order.
There are 12,700 possible full names with the surname on, and 127 different given names without one.
It is written from the kana reading the result shows, with long vowels as double letters. It is not the spelling of any official document.
